TRAMWAY
Piazza Gustavo Modena 6
Operating all-year round (closed on Tuesdays).
Ticket office on site.
Te historical Sassi – Superga rack tramway
is the only one of its kind in Italy. It is
the continuation of an ultra-centenarian
tradition that began on 26 April 1884 with
the first route made by the cable railway,
built with the Agudio system: the train was
powered by an engine towing a steel cable,
which ran parallel to the track on pulleys
placed along the route. The line was then
transformed in 1934, into a rack tramway
with a central rail traction and today,
completely renovated, offers visitors a trip
of yesteryear on original carriages and an
unforgettable panorama. The route unfolds
for more than three kilometres between the
stations of Sassi and Superga (at 650 metres
high). The difference in height of a total 425
metres is exceeded with an average gradient
of 13.5%, with peaks of 21% in the final
stretch between Pian Gambino and Superga
station. Upon arrival at Superga, you can
admire the splendid panorama of Turin and
the Alps and visit the Basilica of Superga,
built by Juvarra and the royal Savoy tombs.
